UTLA Strike

  • California State PTA is a neutral party in this employer-employee negotiations. "California State PTA recognizes that public school employer-employee collective bargaining is mandated by law and that negotations greatly influence education.  As PTA is an organization whose membership is composed of parents, students and school district employees, PTA must remain neutral in a dispute arising from school employer-employee negotiations."  --Brad Waller- Vice President for Communcations, California State PTA.  So, Any PTA member you see speaking for or against the strike is expressing their private opinion
  • School will remain open and in session with regular hours.  Morning valet will be in effect, but the morning laps program will be suspended.  Breakfast and lunch meals will be served, but the super meal usually served after dismissal will NOT be served.  With limited personnel, safety and supervision will be the most pressing concern of the staff on hand.  Please refer to the letter circulated by Mrs. McIntire earlier this week for additional details about class/grade logistics, drop-off/pick-up procedure, etc.   After-school and enrichment programs will continue as usual. [NOTE: Your student MAY attend any after school program or enrichment class they are signed up for, regardless of whether or not they attend school during the strike].

  • IF YOUR CHILD WILL BE ABSENT: The administration is aware that some parents may make the decision to keep their children at home.  There is no need to call the office to report the absence.  The school will take attendance and account for all children present.  It is preferable for you to send an absence note the morning of the first absence, but you may also send it upon you child's return.

  • IF YOUR CHILD WILL BE ATTENDING: For students who will be attending school, LEAVE EXTRA TIME to drop them off and pick them up.  There will be picketing near all school entrances from 7-9 a.m. and in the afternoons around pickup time. Although picketers should not be impeding students, with fewer personnel for valet, there may be additional traffic or delays.  Plan ahead

  • I know we ALL hope for a fast resolution to this unfortunate impasse.  We will remain focused on safety, respect, kindness...and students! Please remember in the days ahead NOT to yell or engage with parents or students on either side of the picket line. Let's keep all interactions safe and student appropriate.

  • If you have more questions, want to talk to other parents, want more updates regarding the strike, information about picketing, etc., a Chandler parent has created an unaffiliated and "unofficial"  Facebook Group "Chandler Elementary Parent - Strike Forum":   https://m.facebook.com/groups/247273419503123?ref=share
